The first time you meet a word like pericarditis or gastroenterology, it can feel like a different language. In a way it is — most clinical vocabulary is built from Greek and Latin. The good news is that it is built from a small, reusable set of pieces. Once you can see the pieces, a term you have never read before stops being a wall of letters and becomes a short sentence you can translate on the spot.
This guide covers the four building blocks of a medical word, gives you tables of the parts you will meet most often, and walks through a simple method for decoding any term. There are no doses, values, or clinical thresholds here — just the language itself.
For a nursing student, this is the difference between drowning in vocabulary and reading a chart with confidence. For a nurse on shift, it is what lets you make sense of an unfamiliar order or a specialist's note without stopping to look up every word. You do not need to memorize thousands of terms. You need to recognize a manageable set of parts and know how they snap together.
The four building blocks
Almost every medical term is assembled from up to four kinds of parts:
- Word root — the core meaning, usually a body part or system. In
cardi-(heart) orhepat-(liver), the root is the anchor everything else attaches to. - Prefix — attaches to the front and modifies the root: where, how many, how much, when, or whether something is present at all.
peri-means "around";hyper-means "excessive." - Suffix — attaches to the end and usually names a condition, a procedure, or a field of study.
-itismeans "inflammation";-ologymeans "the study of." - Combining vowel — usually the letter
o, dropped in to make the word pronounceable when parts are joined. A root plus its combining vowel is called a combining form, written with a slash:cardi/o.
Not every word uses all four. Some are just a prefix and a suffix; some stack two roots together. But if you can name the pieces, you can read the word.
Word roots: the anchor
The root tells you what the term is about. Because anatomy drew from Latin and descriptions of disease drew from Greek, a few structures have two roots that mean the same thing — the kidney is nephr/o (Greek) and ren/o (Latin). You will learn to recognize both.

Prefixes: the front modifier
A prefix sits at the front and changes the root's meaning without changing what the root is. Many come in pairs of opposites — brady- (slow) against tachy- (fast), hyper- (above) against hypo- (below) — which makes them easy to learn two at a time.

Suffixes: the ending that names the idea
The suffix usually carries the payload of the whole word — whether it names a condition, a surgical procedure, a symptom, or a specialty. This is why the decoding method below starts at the end. Learn to spot the difference between the "condition" suffixes (-itis, -osis, -emia) and the "procedure" suffixes (-ectomy, -otomy, -scopy) and half the word is already solved.

A small group of suffixes describe a symptom or a flow rather than a condition or a procedure, and they are worth learning as a set. -pnea is about breathing, -rrhea is about a discharge or flow, and -rrhage is about a bursting or excessive flow. Pair them with a root and the meaning falls out: rhino (nose) plus -rrhea is a runny nose, while hemo (blood) plus -rrhage is a heavy loss of blood.
Combining vowels: the glue
The combining vowel — nearly always o — exists for one reason: to make a mouthful pronounceable. Three short rules cover almost every case:
- Keep the vowel before a suffix that starts with a consonant.
cardi/o+-logybecomes cardiology, not "cardilogy." - Drop the vowel before a suffix that starts with a vowel.
gastr/o+-itisbecomes gastritis, not "gastroitis." - Keep the vowel between two roots, even if the second root starts with a vowel.
gastr/o+enter/o+-itisbecomes gastroenteritis.
A method for decoding any term
When you hit an unfamiliar word, work it in this order every time. With practice it becomes automatic and takes a second or two.
- Split the word into parts — prefix, root(s), suffix.
- Read the suffix first. It usually names the condition, procedure, or field.
- Read the prefix next. It sets the position, number, timing, or whether something is missing.
- Read the root(s) last. They name the body part or system.
- Reassemble the pieces into plain English, back to front.

The same steps handle a procedure word. In arthroscopy, the -scopy suffix tells you it is a visual examination, and the arthr/o root tells you where:
Try the same steps on gastroenterology (gastr/o + enter/o + -logy = the study of the stomach and intestines) and tachycardia (tachy- + cardi + -ia = a condition of a fast heart). The method does not change; only the parts do. The more you read the suffix first, the faster the rest of the word resolves — because the ending is almost always the piece that tells you what kind of word you are looking at.
A few traps to watch
Two habits will save you from the small number of terms that trip people up.
Look-alike roots are not the same root. A handful of parts differ by a letter or two and mean entirely different things. Read carefully:
arthr/o(joint) versusarteri/o(artery) versusather/o(fatty plaque).my/o(muscle) versusmyel/o(bone marrow or spinal cord).ureter/o(ureter) versusurethr/o(urethra).
Plurals follow the original language, not English. Many terms keep their Greek or Latin plural, so the ending changes in a predictable pattern:

That is the whole system. A few hundred parts, three rules for the connecting vowel, and one back-to-front reading order will carry you through the overwhelming majority of clinical vocabulary — at the bedside and on the boards.
